Are we going back to the dark Ages?

Today I will be talking about my book, Travel Memoirs with Pictures: Exploring the world in a different way.
I am not trying to sell this book anymore.
Why?
The world has changed rapidly over the past few days.
Earthquakes have destroyed Mexico,
Hurricanes have destroyed St. Maarten, Anguilla, Puerto Rico, and damaged many of the places I visited in Florida this year.
Terrorists have attacked London, Paris, Germany, and many other countries that I love and visited.
Today, that dreadful attack in Las Vegas was so painful.
People are suffering everywhere.
Today in Trinidad was Budget Day.
The Finance Minister said that the economy is bad and he applied heavy taxes in every area.
The poor and the needy will remain poor and needy.
Is the world going backward?
Authors have written books set in the future with new technology and new inventions but that fictional world seems out of reach.
If there is no money to do basic stuff where is the money for new technology and new inventions?
That is just my thought for the day.

A Florida Vacation to remember

In July 2017 my husband and I flew from Trinidad to Florida to meet my daughter and her family for two weeks of sheer fun and adventure. It was not our first visit to Florida. In fact, it had become an annual one. This time we drove for four hours to Tampa where we stayed at Sailport Waterfront Suites in North Rocky Point. The suites had all amenities with a view of the Bay and the pool, and we were quite comfortable there.

The hotel had exercise facilities too.

We did not stay in the hotel much, however. We had dinner at the Bahama Breeze Restaurant which was a few blocks away. The meals were sumptuous.

Busch Gardens was only twenty minutes away and we could not visit Tampa and not go there.

We also spent time with friends who lived close to the hotel.

On our way back to Hollywood we had lunch at Cracker Barrell in Fort Myers.

The next day we went to Lincoln Street on Miami Beach and had delicious pizzas at Pizza Cruschian.

Other delightful eating places were:

Twin Peaks Restaurant - Pembroke Pines.

Pearly’s Bar and Grill

Sweet Tomatoes

Taco Bell

Cheesecake Factory

Jason’s Deli

The highlight of the trip was the exciting football match at Hard Rock Stadium - PSG versus Juventus.

Brenda Mohammed is an award-winning author who writes in many genres. While many people travel, few of us are capable of sharing our experience in a meaningful and relevant way with strangers. This author does a superb job.

Her book is very personal and one can feel as if a friend were relating her travel impressions and giving us her tips. Paradoxically, this personal and openly subjective touch makes the tips about restaurants and other commercial places for tourists sound less biased than a professional guide book where it is often difficult to distinguish an honest review from a paid ad. In this book, we can read real first-hand accounts that are very precious to any explorers and travelers.

This book can inspire us when we plan our next vacation, it can also make us reflect on our own experience and realize what we might have missed when we visited a particular place, but it can also take us to places we do not have time or money to visit anytime soon. It’s also interesting to read a short entry about places that we consider our home since we cannot always see what makes them special unless we step away and look at them from a distance through a tourist’s eyes.

I found it exciting to read about places I visited and lived since the author has a keen eye and often notices thinks I don’t. But her chapter on Trinidad and Tobago, a place I have not been to, was probably the most interesting one to me. The author was born there and seems to know it very well. The ghost stories about the village of Lopinot make me want to visit and explore the place.

Travel Memoirs - My first trip abroad was unforgettable

My first trip abroad was unforgettable.
I had long leave of 3 months from the bank where I worked after seven years of employment.
Another co-worker and I teamed up and went to New York, Canada, London, Germany, and Holland.
The initial intention was to visit my sister and her family in Germany, but we got a great bargain to visit those other countries on our way to Germany.
My sister's husband was a Sergeant in the Royal Air Force which was stationed in Wildenrath, Germany at the time.

That memorable trip is part of my memoirs in two books - "My Life as a Banker: A life Worth Living,"

and "Travel Memoirs with Pictures: Exploring the World," which is a pictorial book of precious memories.

I also wrote a poem and the first two verses begin with that trip.
Listen to the narration in the video above.

Souvenirs of my Travels

These two are among my many favourite souvenirs.
The one on the right is a miniature Vatican which I bought in Rome. It plays the tune, 'Arriver dechi Roma' and lights up.
It is beautiful when lighted up.
The one on the left is a replica of the famous Eiffel Tower, which I bought in Paris.
It is all decorated with colourful rhinestones.

These are small souvenirs I collected at many of my favourite tourist destinations.
I even have a piece of the Berlin Wall in a glass case.

These are souvenir magnets on my fridge covering many countries that I have visited.

Read my book 'Travel Memoirs with Pictures: Exploring the World.'

Why I Wrote Memoirs

The following is an extract from an article by Rachel McGrath of Indies United Facebook Group.

Brenda Mohammed is a multi-genre author living in Trinidad and Tobago who has now written and published sixteen books.
Six of her books are memoirs and so we asked Brenda to share what instigated her journey to write such personal stories and share them with the world.

Brenda's response:

When I retired from the Bank at an early age, I was depressed.
Everyone in my family noticed that in the weeks leading up to my retirement that my demeanour had changed.
I had ceased to be jovial and fun loving.
My husband and my sisters did their best to brighten up my days and I managed to force a smile or a giggle to appease them, but no one realized that I was feeling as if I had come to the end of my life.
I went through the motions at the grand retirement party, which the bank staff hosted at a popular restaurant in South Trinidad.
Customers and staff were present.
The ambience was enchanting, and the speeches were great.
Superiors, colleagues, customers, and staff showered me with praises and gifts.
Their words brought tears to my eyes. However, all I could think about was, ‘What lies ahead for me?’

Fortunately, for me, my husband had planned a trip for both of us to attend a friend’s wedding in Virginia in the USA.
We left the morning after the retirement party.
All during the flight, I kept remembering the words of the many who spoke at the party.
It all seemed like a dream.
When we arrived in Virginia, I felt relaxed.
Virginia is remarkably beautiful.
We had so much fun over the next three weeks that I forgot all about the bank.

We returned home after a glorious vacation. I gave away all of my working clothes as I felt that I no longer needed them.
I decided to dabble in art.
Out of nowhere, my talent for art surfaced and I painted several pieces, which I framed and hung in my library.
I applied for other jobs and received positive responses from many firms.
I accepted a job in an Insurance Company, and of course had to buy a new wardrobe of clothes.
Since I did not have to work full time, I needed something else to keep me busy.
It was then that I decided to write My Life as a Banker: A Life worth Living.
The book has been very popular with fellow bankers in Trinidad.
I revised the book in 2014, published it on Amazon and Create Space, and donated copies to the National Library of Trinidad and Tobago, and my Alma Mater St. Augustine Girls’ High School.
My Life as a Banker - A Life worth Living" is a banker's memoir, in which I describe changes in the banking system and changes in the bank's attitude to its employees throughout my working years in a Trinidad bank, with ties in the United Kingdom.
Personal details of my life are the highlights of the memoir.
Reviewers have described the book as Fascinating, Intriguing, Inspiring, Positive, Heartwarming, and Motivational.

Later on, I was having so much fun as a retiree, that I wrote, Retirement is Fun: A New Chapter.
The book is a sequel to "My Life as a Banker - A Life Worth Living."
I learned through my many experiences at the end of my banking career, that retirement is a time to enjoy life.
I faced many challenges such as cancer, deaths of loved ones, and an accident in Miami, which made her realize that life is very short. On the other hand, I landed a new job in an Insurance company and had numerous travel opportunities after I left my job at the bank. I have proven that when one retires from a first job one does not retire from life.

My recovery from cancer inspired me to write another memoir, I am Cancer Free.
It is a book about my battle with Ovarian Cancer.
The killer disease threatened my life and financial well- being.
My strong faith in God saw me through all the trials I had to undergo.
Cancer does not have to be a death sentence.

My career in the Insurance Industry was successful.
I qualified each year for membership in The Million Dollar Round Table [The Premier Association for Financial Professionals], and this gave me many opportunities to travel to different parts of the United States to attend conferences.
My frequent travels worldwide prompted me to write another memoir, Travel Memoirs with Pictures: Exploring the World.
It is an entertaining book filled with reflections of my travels around the world.
I also relate the family adventures and treat readers to a pictorial story of priceless memories.
I describe places visited and the wonderful times my family and I had in our tourist trips.
The book is great to read while on a vacation or for some travel inspiration.

I was later inspired to write yet another memoir – Your Time is Now: A Time to be Born and a Time to die.
I had a driving force within me to write this one.
I based the content on powerful words spoken by King Solomon in the Book of Ecclesiastes about times and seasons. "There is a time to be born and a time to die, and a time for every purpose under the Heaven."

Both My Life as a Banker: A Life worth Living and Retirement is Fun: A New Chapter were nominated in the Category Bio/Memoirs for Metamorph Publishing Summer Indie Book Awards 2016.
The final results showed that My Life as a Banker: A Life worth Living placed second in that category.
I am Cancer Free: A Memoir won the McGrath’s House Indie Book Awards in the category Non-Fiction in November 2016.
I want to take this opportunity to thank all my Facebook friends, family, former banking colleagues, and friends in Author groups, who all voted for my books.

The Wedding Feast at Cana

The largest painting in the world at the Louvre, Paris is 'The Wedding Feast at Cana.
In my book 'Travel Memoirs with Pictures' I described my trip to the Louvre, Paris.
We visited Paris in August 2014 and I was thrilled to see that of “The Wedding Feast at Cana” by Italian Painter Paolo Veronese.
I took a photo of it with my husband standing in front.
This is what is written in the records at The Louvre: ”

'In 1553, Veronese was summoned to Venice where he gave free rein to his decorative talent in vast canvases that blended masterful composition, splendid contemporary costumes, and luminous colors.
The Wedding Feast at Cana graced the refectory designed by Palladio for the Benedictine monastery on the Venetian island of San Giorgio Maggiore.
With masterly freedom of interpretation, Veronese transposed the biblical episode to the sumptuous setting of a Venetian wedding.”
For those of you who do not know the Biblical story of this event I quote from a write-up by the Louvre, Paris below:
“A biblical scene within a Venetian banquet In Cana, Galilee, Christ is invited to a wedding feast during which he performs his first miracle.
At the end of the banquet, when the wine is running low, he asks the servants to fill the stone jars with water and then offer them to the master of the house, who finds that the water has been turned to wine.
This episode, told by the Apostle John, is a precursor of the Eucharist.
The bride and groom are seated at the left end of the table, leaving the center place to the figure of Christ.
He is surrounded by the Virgin, his disciples, clerks, princes, Venetian noblemen, Orientals in turbans, several servants, and the populace. Some figures are dressed in traditional antique costumes, while others—the women in particular—wear sumptuous coiffures and adornments.
Veronese depicts, with apparent ease, no less than 130 feast-goers, mixing biblical figures with men and women of the period.
The latter are not really identifiable, although according to an 18th-century legend, the artist himself is depicted in white with a viola da gamba next to Titian and Bassano, all of whom contribute to the musical entertainment.
The bearded master of ceremonies could be Aretino, whom Veronese greatly admired. Several dogs, birds, a parakeet, and a cat frolic amidst the crowd.'

I bought a copy of a much smaller version of the painting at the Museum shop.
I framed it and it graces my living room.

Before visiting Paris I wrote several poems. One of them was on The Miracle at Cana where Jesus turned the water into wine.

Here is the poem:

THE MIRACLE AT THE WEDDING AT CANA [John Chapter 2; 1-12]
Jesus attended a wedding celebration with his mother.
The wine supply ran out at this wedding in Cana.
Jesus’ mother turned to Jesus for help.
But Jesus replied that his time had not come yet.

His mother left it up to Jesus and told the servants to assist.
Six large stone water- pots were standing there in the midst.
Jesus told the servants to fill them with water to the brim.
The servants did what he said and listened to him.

When the jars had been filled Jesus told the servants to dip.
And take some to the master of ceremonies” and they followed his tip.
The master of ceremonies tasted the wine and remarked to the host.
“You have saved the best wine for last. You are a great host.’

This poem is included in Poems which I published in my memoir 'Your Time is Now.'

Travel Memoirs with Pictures - Our Trip To Venice

Today I will tell my readers a little about Venice, that beautiful city surrounded by water.
I chose a picture of Venice for my book cover which was created by the talented Ciara Power.
I will quote an extract from my book.

"On 19th August 2009, we left Florence and travelled by Eurostar to Venice, which was one place in Italy I always longed to visit. As I sat on the train, I recalled some of the things I was told about this city built on swamps. Some had said that the Grand Canal waters were smelly and it was not comfortable travelling by boats on the fetid waters. I had seen movies with people travelling through the canals on gondoliers. It looked so romantic, and I wondered what it would be like when we got there. I had also read that Venice is the sublime capital of masked carnivals, reveries, intrigue, and romance.

I did not have to wonder for long as we arrived there in less than two hours. We took a water bus to get to our hotel. As we rode through the canal, we saw splendid palaces, bridges, gardens, and warehouses that lined the banks of the Grand Canal. The atmosphere was magical.

I thought that the waterbus would take us directly to the hotel, but we had to walk a long distance lugging our suitcases to get there. We also had to climb several steps at various intervals, as several bridges punctuated the meandering canals. We finally arrived at the Hotel American-Dinesen in Academia and were warmly greeted by the hotel staff. The rooms were elegantly decorated, and we had all the comforts of a good hotel. My sister from Los Angeles had made the bookings for all the hotels in Italy, and she had made superb selections.
When we finally settled in, it was close to 3.00 pm, and we went out to find a restaurant to get some lunch. Every restaurant was closed for siesta, and we were told that we had to wait for dinnertime, which started at 6.00 pm. As the sun was scorching hot, we headed back to the hotel to relax until dinnertime. We all met promptly at 6.00 pm in the hotel’s lounge to head out to dinner, as we were all famished. We found an excellent restaurant in the same area that our hotel was located. The meal was quite tasty and enjoyable.

After dinner, we strolled along the streets and crossed the bridges to take in a good view of the city. The next day the hotel staff arranged a free ride for us on a water taxi to take us to the popular Murano Glass Factory. The water taxi met us at the pier directly in front of the hotel. We all climbed in safely and set off to our destination. My husband took a brief nap on the way.

When we got to the factory, a gentleman was there to greet us and to help us disembark. He took us straight to the shop for a demonstration on how they make glass products. It was a little scary considering the closeness of the fiery furnace required to melt the glass, but fascinating indeed. Then he took us to rooms filled with the finished products. We were not allowed to take photos. Words cannot describe the beauty of the chandeliers, vases, ornaments, and jewellery, which we saw. “Wow!” is only but a mild expression. My husband bought me a set of jewels for our wedding anniversary at that factory and my brother-in-law bought a set for my sister for their anniversary. After we had left the factory, we visited several shops and purchased more jewelry to give as presents to our loved ones at home in Trinidad. We then visited St. Mark’s Square and the Basilica. [St. Mark’s Square]
We did a great deal of walking in Venice, through many alleys and back streets that led to the places of interest. Besides, as we navigated through the streets and climbed many steps across bridges, we had the opportunity to browse the many shops and to do shopping. We also stopped now and again to watch the stately gondoliers drive down the canal. A ride cost eighty Euros per person, so we skipped that trip and watched others splurge. A ride in the water taxi or waterbus was much cheaper."

To read the rest of the experience in Venice and to see the pictures you can purchase the books at Amazon Universal Link THe book is also available in Paperback at Amazon.

Travel Memoirs With Pictures is the second travelogue I have read this year, and just like the other book, readers will find themselves treated to a pictorial story as they go along. Some books like these tend to be 'photo-heavy' and rather redundant with the actual test.

In other words, pretty pictures alone do not make for a great book. So it's with pleasure that this book gives us insight into many countries.

I paid particular regard to places I had been to before in this book, for example, places like Los Angeles, Las Vegas, Italy, France (because I have been to these places before) and others.

Of the places I haven't yet been to, I would dearly love to go to Cartegena (in fact, thank you,Author for putting this idea in my head!), but readers will have their own choices as they read the book.

Of course, the author has been to England and to my country's capital, London. As a national I must say that whilst London is definitely worth visiting, there are many gems in England that people don't know about. Aside from writing, I do love to get out there and see what England....10 minutes drive in any direction from where I live, has to offer.

Travel Memoirs With Pictures offers readers a personal glance into one tourist's view of many different places, and the different ways one can travel to them.

Recommended for anyone who has the travel bug!

All about Trinidad and Tobago

Trinidad & Tobago - On the Rise from QCPTV on Vimeo.

An author friend of mine told me that one of her friends will be visiting Trinidad shortly. She asked me to suggest places that she should visit when she arrives. Here is the letter from her friend:

"I am planning to go to Trinidad at the end of the month and
looking to write a few stories about the island, culture, and
overall high-end lifestyle scene.
It would be cool to do a Travel Guide about where to stay, eat
and party for fashionable and chic travelers who are looking to
escape the cold winter months that are now upon us.
I've never been to this part of the globe, so I'm looking to
connect with any local designers, seamstresses, even cool
factories, secret gardens, cool hiking trails, waterfalls, high
shopping...
I am open to anything really.
Not sure where I'm staying yet, but I definitely would love
beach and hotel suggestions!!!"

I sent her the Video to look at so she will get an idea of the island's resources and beauty.
Other articles which describe Trinidad and Tobago and which I sent to her are Ten Reasons to love Trinidad and Tobago and Discover Trinidad and Tobago

I wrote about Trinidad and Tobago in my Travel Memoirs and thought that might be of interest too.

Last of all, I am giving away my book called Squeaky Doo in Trinidad which both children and adults can appreciate.

Do you love to travel?
Then you will love Trinidad and Tobago/

TRINIDAD AND TOBAGO

The country of my birth is an island paradise. Carnival is a national celebration and is an unforgettable experience. The diversity of our people is reflected in the islands' numerous festivals. People that inhabit these islands celebrate each individual culture. In Trinidad and Tobago, we celebrate the Hindu festival of Divali, the Muslim festival of Eid-ul-Fitr, and Christian festivals, including Christmas and Easter. We have lovely beaches and hotels with international standards. Trinidad and Tobago is a tourist destination. Whether you are seeking adventure, sea-bathing, culture or nightlife, Trinidad and Tobago is waiting to amaze you. From the cosmopolitan streets of the capital of Port-of-Spain to the tranquil beaches of Maracas and Tobago, there is something here for everyone.

Here are a few reasons to visit:

1. Trinidad and Tobago hosts the second largest Carnival celebration in the Caribbean- [Brazil is first]. Carnival is held in Port of Spain, Trinidad, and Tobago, on the Monday and Tuesday preceding Ash Wednesday. Costumes are elaborate and stunning, and some individual ones are large enough to fill a room.

2. The sweet music of the steel band - The steelpan is the national instrument of Trinidad and Tobago. You will delight in this sound of music.

3. Local cuisine – You will love our spicy and non-spicy foods.

4. Our beaches – Experience white sands in Maracas and Tobago beaches.

5. Calypso Music – You will laugh at the lyrics and jump to the beat.

6. The Ghost of Lopinot – Those of you who like ghost stories and mystery will love this experience.

WHY I WROTE MEMOIRS

When I retired from the Bank at an early age, I was depressed.
Everyone in my family noticed that in the weeks leading up to my retirement my demeanour had changed. I had ceased to be jovial and fun loving. My husband and my sisters did their best to brighten up my days. I managed to force a smile or a giggle to appease them, but no one realized that I was feeling as if I had come to the end of my life.

However, all I could think about was, “What lies ahead for me?”

It was then that I decided to write ‘My Life as a Banker: A Life worth Living.”

The book has been very popular with fellow bankers in Trinidad. I revised the book in 2014, published it on Amazon and Create Space, and donated copies to the National Library of Trinidad and Tobago, and my Alma Mater St. Augustine Girls’ High School.

Later on, I was having so much fun as a retiree, that I wrote, ‘Retirement is Fun: A New Chapter.’
Notwithstanding my bout with Cancer in 2005 and a terrible car accident, while vacationing in Miami in 2011, retirement has indeed been fun.

My recovery from cancer inspired me to write another memoir, “I am Cancer Free.”

My career in the Insurance Industry was also successful. I qualified each year for membership in The Million Dollar Round Table [The Premier Association for Financial Professionals], and this gave me many opportunities to travel to different parts of the United States to attend the MDRT conferences. My frequent travels worldwide prompted me to write another memoir, ‘Travel Memoirs with Pictures.’

I was inspired to write yet another memoir - 'Your Time is Now : A Time to be born and a Time to die.' I had a driving force within me to write this one. The book explains it all.

Last, but not least, is my father's memoirs. I wrote that book a number of years after the death of my father. He was an educator and his story is very motivational. I gathered information from notes and diaries he kept and I put the book together. Past and present Presidents of Trinidad and Tobago have requested copies for their libraries.

Both My Life as a Banker: A Life worth Living and Retirement is Fun: A New Chapter were nominated in the Category Bio/Memoirs for Metamorph Publishing Summer Indie Book Awards 2016. The preliminary results show that My Life as a Banker: A Life worth Living placed second in that category.
I want to take this opportunity to thank all my Facebook friends, family, former banking colleagues, and friends in Author groups, who all voted for my books.

Books are available at Amazon, Barnes and Nobles and Create Space.
