A TRIBUTE TO A NOBEL LAUREATE ON TRINIDAD AND TOBAGO'S INDEPENDENCE DAY 2024

 



Trinidad and Tobago’s 62nd Independence Day is celebrated on  Saturday 31st August 2024.

To celebrate this day, members of the Camara International Chamber of Writers and Artists [ CIESART]  will write tributes to the deceased Nobel Laureate in Literature - Vidiadhar Surajprasad 'V.S.' Naipaul.

Here is mine.

A TRIBUTE TO V.S. NAIPAUL – NOBEL LAUREATE

 

Trinidadian Vidiadhar Surajprasad 'V.S.' Naipaul was an Indo-Caribbean writer.

In 2001, V. S. Naipaul was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature.

In his works, he united perceptive narrative and incorruptible scrutiny,

To compel us to see the existence of suppressed histories.

Born and raised in Trinidad and Tobago, to which his ancestors emigrated from India,

Naipaul lived a humble life despite his popularity as a writer.

His pessimistic novels are set in developing countries.  

The chronicles of his life and travels are widely admired by all societies.

He studied at University College, Oxford on a Trinidad government scholarship.

He worked briefly for the BBC Caribbean Service.

His first three award-winning books are comic portrayals of Trinidadian lives.

His first novel set in England, won the Hawthornden Prize.

Naipaul's subsequent novels centered on his political views.

He started writinge about colonial and post-colonial issues.

The Nobel Laureate is also the author of some works of non-fiction.

V. S. Naipaul was knighted in 1989 for his artistry and diction.

In 1993, the Arts Council of England awarded him the David Cohen Literature Prize.

His greatest achievement was in 2001 when he was awarded the Literature Nobel Prize.

A holder of many international honorary doctorates and awards,

At the age of 85, he passed away at his London home abroad.

Among her publications are two Peace Anthologies - Peace Begins with Us, and Creating a Better World, three Anthologies for Suicide Prevention titled A Spark of Hope I, II, and III, and two Anthologies, Break the Silence: Poems Against Domestic Violence.
