THE DANGEROUS MOSQUITO

THE DANGEROUS MOSQUITO

A few weeks ago, Dr. James Bale saw a series of MRI images in a medical journal of MRI scans of babies infected with Zika in the womb.

REFERENCE:

The scans showed something Bale had seen only a few times in his 30-year career: a phenomenon called fetal brain disruption sequence.

As the fetus's brain starts to grow, it creates pressure, which pushes on the skull and causes it to grow. But if something stops brain growth — such as a virus — pressure on the skull drops, and the skull can collapse down onto the brain.

The skin around the head continues to grow, Bale says. So the baby is born with wrinkles of skin at the back of the neck and a tiny skull. In some cases, the baby's head is as small as an orange, or about half the size of a healthy baby's head.

"It's quite remarkable what the Zika virus is doing to the brain of young infants," Bale says. "Many of them will die often in infancy, and the majority, if not all, will then have a long-term, severe developmental problems."

Zika Is Linked To Microcephaly, Health Agencies Confirm

Now scientists think they have an understanding about how Zika causes these severe brain malformations. The findings come from a series of mouse experiments, published Wednesday in three leading journals.

In one study, published in Nature, Alysson Muotri and his team at the University of California, San Diego, infected pregnant mice with Zika and looked to see how the virus harmed the baby mice.

"We detected the virus all over the mice and in different regions of the body," Muotri says.

But for some reason — and scientists don't know why yet — Zika is particularly attracted to brain cells. And once inside the cells, Muotri says, Zika turns them into viral factories that start producing huge amounts of virus. Until they burst.

"They explode, and more viral particles are released that can infect other cells. And they can just amplify themselves," Muotri says.

More and more brain cells get infected. More die. This cell death is already a problem for the fetus. It scars the brain and creates inflammation.

But the situation gets worse because the brain cells infected by Zika are extremely special. They're called neural progenitor cells. And they're responsible for building a large portion of the brain.

"These are fast-replicating cells that will give rise to billions of cells in our brains," Muotri says.

So if a fetus loses even just a small percentage of these cells, a portion of its brain will never develop. "And the impact later in life would be dramatic," he says.

In 2017, I wrote a Futiristic Thriller Series inspired by the Zika Virus.

A script for a Movie is being written.

THREE INTRIGUING MYSTERY THRILLERS IN ONE BOOK

THREE INTRIGUING MYSTERY THRILLERS IN ONE BOOK

I am sharing a five-star review from Readers' Favorite for Barry Holmes Mysteries, a Mystery thriller.
Reviewed by Peggy Jo Wipf for Readers' Favorite
Barry Holmes Mysteries: Tales of Mysterious Disappearances by Brenda Mohammed combines three intriguing mystery thrillers. When Barry Holmes realizes that he is not good enough for Crystal's father, he leaves the Caribbean Islands.
Five years later, she desperately needs his help finding her daughter.
Through this act of love, Barry finds a new career and family. He then becomes the head detective; he faces unusual and baffling cases that stump other detectives.
Honesty, trust, and intuition are his motto. Barry doesn't assume the obvious suspect is the criminal and digs deeper until the truth comes to light.
The first story, The Gift of Love, was my favorite. How will he find a child that everyone claims is non-existent, when the mother insists she was abducted? This was three months after she was in a coma with head injuries.
Brenda Mohammed is a refreshing author that brings out the best in her characters.
Barry Holmes Mysteries includes three short stories that introduce Barry and his skills in deductive reasoning.
I found the stories simple, but the plots unusual.
From the beginning, the author seizes the reader's interest and draws you into the lives of her characters and the beautiful Caribbean Islands.
Each story holds all the elements of a good mystery novel; well-rounded characters, a solid plot, and twists that unfold as the crimes are solved.
The author is known for her diverse interests and writing abilities, which come out in her stories. I enjoyed reading this book and look forward to any other Barry Holmes mysteries."
THe book won two awards - One from India in Culture, Literature, and Research, and one from CIESART Spain on World Book Day.

NOBEL PRIZE SUMMIT 2023 HIGHLIGHTS

HIGHLIGHTS OF NOBEL PRIZE SUMMIT 2023

HIGHLIGHTS OF THE NOBEL PRIZE SUMMIT 2023
TRUTH, TRUST, AND HOPE.
On the first day, Wednesday 24th May 2023, of the three-day summit, Truth was discussed by Nobel Prize Laureates.
I was in the virtual audience and participated in the questions and answers segment.
Truth is vital and matters more than ever today.
There is truth, misinformation, and disinformation.
Misinformation and disinformation are undermining Society and it is not limited to science
Citizens deserve to be reliably informed, because misinformation and disinformation cause rifts in society.
Misinformation may be caused by genuine mistakes of those reporting it, but disinformation is false information which is spread deliberately.
Cultural Mind-sets and Memory Distortion are counter-productive to Progress.
The Summit continued on Thursday and Friday, when Trust and Hope was discussed.
DAY TWO - THURSDAY- I participated in Deliberative Polling Exercise
DAY THREE - Finding Solutions and a Final Survey of the Proceedings.
