Author Spotlight with Brenda Mohammed
Short Bio
Brenda, a multi-genre author, lives on the beautiful tropical island of Trinidad in the Caribbean.
A former Bank Manager and Insurance Professional, she turned to writing after she retired from the corporate world.
Brenda loves to travel. She has written sixteen books to date: six memoirs, one children's book, four short story collections, and a horror
series of five books.
When choosing a name for your characters, what do you consider about them that determines what you finally call them?
I think about the role I have planned for my characters before I name them.
For instance, in one of my books, Revenge of Zeeka – A Trilogy, I introduced a female robot and named her Miranda.
One reviewer could not help but refer to her in his review.“The highlight is Miranda (oh, Miranda!), whose presence gives a lot of weight and realism to the futuristic theme and setting of 2036.”
Did you have a collection in mind when you were writing them?
I wrote four collections of short stories. “Heart- Warming Tales,” “Stories People Love,” “Revenge of Zeeka – A Trilogy,”
and "Zeeka Chronicles."
At first I wrote several stories as kindle short reads, but later on, I put all the stories into the above books.
How did you choose which stories to include and in what order?
The first collection, “Heart-Warming Tales,” are four stories based on real life events.
One reviewer had this to say about the book,“Heart Warming Tales is a short book of stories with intriguing plots and pleasant characters. Although each story is set within the real world, there seems to be a fantastical quality to each. The style of the writing is satisfyingly simple and easy to follow.”
The second collection, “Stories People Love” contains four short stories of crime, adventure, and love.
A reviewer referred to this book as “a collection of stories all connected by the common theme of hope.”
Another said, "This is a neat and extremely readable collection and shows an author who is able to write fiction and non-fiction elements seamlessly. It's not an easy combination and yet the author pulls it off admirably."
The third collection, “Revenge of Zeeka – A Trilogy,” was only released on 4th May 2016.
The story, which is set in the year 2036, was told in three parts, which are also available as Kindle short reads.
The book received a five-star review and five-star seal from Readers favorite in September 2016.
I thought of ending the series at that point, but Zeeka got into my head and I wrote two more books making the number of books in the series five.
That is why, I published Zeeka Chronicles, the fourth collection of short stories.
The series is all about Zeeka, and his intent on revenge for something that occurred twenty years before.
Do you have a “reader” in mind when you write stories?
I write for both young adults and mature audiences.
What do you do to get book reviews? What is the best review you ever got?
I depend on purchasers of my books to do reviews, but that does not always happen.
I had several Free promotions on Amazon Kindle Publishing and had thousands of downloads, but I received no reviews from these promotions.
I received Five Star reviews for most of my books from verified purchasers, and it is hard to say which is the best review I ever got.
However, I do like this review for Zeeka Chronicles as I found it quite perky.
"5.0 out of 5.0 stars
Teens and up will adore this book
By Amazon Reviewer
March 9, 2017
Format: Paperback
I was thrilled to receive my advance copy of this book because it contains all five Zeeka stories, which are among my favorite spooky reads.
This series is about the havoc the sinister Zeeka and his Zombies unleashed on a little island in the Caribbean and the impact on people who live there.
The darker side of humanity is explored with unforeseeable plot twists taking the reader down a sometimes grisly path.
Thankfully, there is light at the end of the tunnel and I eventually emerged with feelings of redemption and satisfaction.
Future tech is highlighted throughout the series making me desire one of the book's robot helpers who does dishes and kicks butt too."
What does the word “story” mean to you?
A story is an account of real or fictitious events.
The plot and characters must be appealing to readers.
When I write, I bear this in mind.
Have any of your books won any awards?
"I am Cancer Free: A Memoir' won the McGrath House Publishing Award in the Category Non-Fiction in November 2016.
The book also received a five-star review and five-star seal from Readers Favorite in February 2017.
My Life as a Banker: A Life worth Living was voted second in Bio/Memoirs in the Metamorph Publishing Summer Indie Book Awards in September 2016.
Retirement is Fun: A New Chapter was also a Nominee in the Metamorph Publishing Summer Indie Book Awards in September 2016.

5.0 out of 5 starsThoughtful and detailed account of defeating the most terrible of diseases
By Kato's Revenge on May 21, 2016
Format: Kindle Edition
I am Cancer Free is an extremely positive title for something that is so terrifying to pretty much all of us, were we to be diagnosed with it.
No illness is pleasant, but surely cancer is one of the very worst, and although survival rates are increasing all the time depending on the type of cancer concerned, it is good to know that the author, who thankfully defeated this terrible disease, overcome it in order to pen this extremely good read.
From a carefree life, visiting friends and relatives, through to the initial concerns and then onto the diagnosis, the author takes us on a journey in this book. But potential readers shouldn't be put off by the subject matter. The author has bravely chose to share her experience with the reader. It is never negative, although some of it is very harrowing to read.
The description of the subsequent and very necessary operation which resulted in the author regaining her full health is a case of just enough information. There's no need for gory details and we don't get them. In essence, the author has the balance right between info-dumping and info-giving.
Again, it's a book that educates and informs.
Thank goodness for medical insurance. In the UK, we are fortunate that the NHS provides many life saving treatments. I do hope the government (s) wake up and spend money on research to defeat this terrible disease in all its forms.
Well done to the author on the beating of this disease and in the creation of this book.
5.0 out of 5 starsRemarkaby detailed, and poignant description of the author's experiences as she was diagnosed and treated for ovarian cancer.
By Arabella Persaud on June 19, 2014
Format: Paperback Verified Purchase
This true story should be read by every person who has been diagnosed with or who has ever suffered from cancer. Their loved ones will also benefit from reading this autobiographical account. The author has an impressive memory for details and gives an excellent account of everything that she went through during that trying period from her diagnosis to the successful treatment of the disease. She narrates, in depth, all her experiences during her treatment, including her personal feelings, her understandable fears, and even financial matters. Displaying an exceptionally lucid memory, she remembers every single person who supported her during that time period and every single little detail including the hurricane that struck Miami after her second chemotherapy session and the inconveniences incurred with regard to electricity in the house and gas for the car. She also remembers in detail every restaurant in which she ate in Miami and everyone who visited her. Her memory of every important date is extremely remarkable.
During all the upheavals, the author never lost her faith in God. Her undaunting faith upheld her and comforted her during this dark period of her life. Her story clearly demonstrates that faith in God surmounts all obstacles.
The book makes easy ready and the style is almost conversational. One gets the feeling that the author is speaking directly to the reader. It is an intensely personal narration and I recommend this book highly.

Mercedes Fox interviews Brenda Mohammed
Howdy my lovelies!
Welcome to Interview FoxSeat with guest author Brenda Mohammed
Brenda, a multi-genre author, lives in the beautiful tropical island of Trinidad in the Caribbean. A former Bank Manager and Insurance Professional, she turned to writing after she retired from the corporate world. Brenda loves to travel and enjoys a game of Scrabble when she is not writing, or reading books by other authors. She has written thirteen books: – six memoirs [one on her travels], one children’s book, three short-story [fiction] collections, and three kindle zombie thriller short reads.
Book blurb: Brenda’s latest book is a zombie mystery trilogy, “Revenge of Zeeka – A Trilogy.”
It is the complete trilogy of a multi-layered zombie tale, set in the year 2036 in a small exotic island called Gosh. The story is told in three parts, which are available as kindle short reads. Zeeka and the Zombies is an intriguing introduction to this story of futuristic zombies, and it leaves you wondering what will happen next. In Zeeka’s Child, the plot gets more complicated, and after many twists and turns, Zeeka is revealed. In the final episode, Zeeka Returns, this very exciting three-part series concludes in a most surprising way.
This is what one reviewer said, “I’m happy to see all three stories together in one package because they make for an easy read and a thrilling one too. The author skillfully thought of not telling just another zombie story. Since the stories are based in the future, she included technology unheard of before. Also, there are plot twists that will leave your head spinning and an exciting hunt for the clever mastermind, Zeeka. Young adult and adult readers will enjoy this trilogy.”
>Why do you write?
I write because I have stories to tell. I believe readers can learn something from each of my books.
>
When did you decide to become a writer?
I decided to become a writer after I left the corporate world. I was a former Bank Manager and Insurance Professional.
What genre are your books?
I am a multi-genre author. I write fiction as well as non-fiction.
How long does it usually take you to complete a book?
It all depends on the plot. Short stories take about two months to complete, but larger books take up to a year or more.
What made you decide to sit down and actually start something?
I wrote a biography of my father while I was still employed at the Bank. I did that book out of love for my deceased father who was an Educator. He wrote all his notes in diaries and scraps of paper and I gathered them all up and did a book. I thought that his life was worthy of recording. However, I did not publish the book at that time. I revised it in November 2014 and published it in both kindle and paperback. I started writing seriously in the year 2013. My first book was a children’s story. It was about the adventures of a teddy bear with a wonderful family. After that, I wrote my own autobiography, “My Life as a Banker – A Life worth Living.” The positive reviews I got from those books just led me on to write more books.
Do you have a special time to write or how is your day structured?
At first, I wrote at nights but nowadays, I just write anytime I have an urge to do so.
What have you written?
I have written the following books:
“Memoirs of Dr. A. M. Khan” [2014] – The book is about the life of my father. One reviewer has described this book accurately. “There is a need for books like this one- books which document the struggle of the first generations of immigrants and their children to carve a place in their society, and then provide the foundation for the next generation to achieve even greater success. In broad terms, this is general knowledge. What is valuable in this book is the step-by-step description detailing the road map by which one successful educator did so.”
“My Life as a Banker: A Life Worth Living” [2014]- Brenda’s autobiography.
In this book, I related how banking evolved from manual operations to the sophisticated computerized system, which staff and customers now enjoy. I recalled the days when banks were small post office like structures and the hard work involved in bringing them to modern day standard. It is also the true story of the determination of a sixteen-year-old girl to succeed in what was a man’s world in those days. The book also reveals some very personal details about my life. It is a Memoir with a difference. It is both motivational and inspirational.
“Retirement is Fun: A New Chapter” (2014) – This book is a sequel to “My Life as a Banker.” I learnt through my many experiences that retirement is a time to enjoy life. I faced many challenges such as cancer, deaths of loved ones, and an accident, which made me realize that life is very short. On the other hand, I landed a new job, and had numerous travel opportunities. I proved that when I retired from my job at the bank, I definitely did not retire from life.
“Stories People Love” (2014) – This book contains short stories of Crime, Adventure, and Love as follows: 1. A Headmaster’s Daughter – In the fifties, when little value was placed on education for girls, a passionate young girl finds true love. 2. Travel Dreams of Yesterday – Two young adventurous girls take a trip across the world. 3. The Dirtiest of all evils – A thrilling murder mystery that will keep you guessing as to how it will all end. 4. Age Difference – A Love Story. True love knows no bounds but can there be a limit to the age of your partner? One reviewer referred to this book as “A collection of stories all connected by the common theme of hope.” Another said, “This is a neat and extremely readable collection and shows an author who is able to write fiction and non-fiction elements seamlessly. It’s not an easy combination and yet the author pulls it off admirably.”
“Adventures of Squeaky Doo – A Teddy Bear’s adventures” (2014)
This book is a short story collection related by a Teddy Bear named Squeaky Doo. Five stories are contained therein:
Squeaky Doo on the Beach
Squeaky Doo in California
Squeaky Doo in Orlando
Squeaky Doo goes on a Cruise
Squeaky Doo in Trinidad
Marge loved her Teddy bear and took it with her wherever she went. The teddy Bear never missed a family event. He was always in her arms, at family gatherings, trips around the world, or when she went shopping with her parents. The only place she could not take the teddy bear was to school.
However, something always went wrong. She would fall asleep, her parents would lift her and put her to bed, and poor Squeaky Doo was always left back in strange places. Miraculously he was found each time.
“Your Time Is Now: A Time to be Born and a Time to Die” (2014)
In this memoir, Your Time is Now - A Time to be born and a time to Die, I connect powerful words of wisdom with events in my life and the lives of others.
It is written, based on powerful words spoken by King Solomon in the Book of Ecclesiastes about times and seasons. "There is a time to be born and a time to die, and a time for every purpose under the Heaven."
The book is intended to help people understand their own lives and to realize that we are all here on earth for a purpose.
I added inspirational Poems, and I have included a section on A Brother's Wisdom.
One reviewer said, " I recommend it to all especially to you who in times when the clouds grow dark- the silver linings emerge to remind us of a light emerging on the other side."
“I am Cancer Free” (2013)
This is a true story about my battle with ovarian cancer. That was a time when that dreadful disease threatened my life and financial well-being. Writing this book gave me the opportunity to demonstrate to others the meaning of prayer and family unity. Ten years hence, I am Cancer Free. I have included my thoughts on The True Value of Insurance.
“Heart-Warming Tales” (2014)
Heart - Warming Tales consists of four unusual and enjoyable tales of comedy, Crime, Love, Infidelity, Unhappy Marriages, and Dead Business, bundled together in one book.
"The Psychiatrist and the Thief," is a short comedy- mystery for your entertainment.
"Her Online Predator" is an exciting mystery - thriller /romance. It is a must read especially for young people who like to make friends on the Internet..That friend you make may not be who he/she claims to be.
"A Marriage on the Rocks," is about a young couple in an unhappy marriage. Did their marriage survive?
"The Undertaker's wife" is about a suspicious wife who doubted her husband.
“Travel Memoirs with Pictures: Exploring the world.” (2014)
This is a memoir of my travels around the world. In this book I related the family adventures, described places visited, and the wonderful times my family and I had in our travels to over thirty-four countries in the world.
“Revenge of Zeeka: Zeeka and the Zombies” Book 1[2016] – This story is a multi-layered intro to a much bigger zombie tale.
“Zeeka’s Child [Revenge of Zeeka Book 2]” [2016] – The story evolves into a more complicated plot of kidnapping, suicide note, diamond necklace with tracking device, arson, flesh – eating zombies, major corruption in the Police Force and a few ‘skeletons’ jump out of the closet.
“Zeeka Returns [Revenge of Zeeka Book 3]” [2016] -This book is the conclusion to the Zeeka story and is an exciting end to the trilogy.
Do you design your own book covers or have someone else? If you use someone else would you tell us who/website?
I recently discovered a very good cover designer. She is Kim McDougall of Catellane.com
Where do your ideas come from?
Sometimes I am in the shower and I get my ideas.
What is the hardest thing about writing?
Writing is not hard. Editing is.
What is the current book you are promoting?
My latest book was released on 4th May 2016. The name is Revenge of Zeeka – A Trilogy as described in Question 2.
If your book were made into a movie, whom would you cast?
If my book, Revenge of Zeeka – A Trilogy were made into a movie, I would want Gerard Butler, Angelina Jolie, and George Clooney as the leading actors.
Join the supporters for this movie at this link
Do you or have you sat down and read your book fresh off the presses as if it wasn’t yours? And if you did, what was it like?
Yes I did. I always found that I could improve on them.
What book are you currently reading or just finished?
I just read and reviewed John Hennessy’s “Clara’s Song.” It was a psychological thriller. John Hennessy is the British author of paranormal fantasy horror for YA, psychological horror and murder mysteries, plus his own unique take on vampire lore. He has also written ghost stories and delved into high epic fantasy with a hint of romance.
What do your fans mean to you?
I love my fans. I look forward daily to their comments on social media.
Is there a book you love you’d like to recommend to others?
I would like to recommend this book by Radu Balas to all aspiring authors: “Sell More Books Using Your Author Website: The Easiest Way to Brand, Build, Market, and Manage Your Authorship.” It can be very helpful.

Many thanks Brenda! For more about Brenda and her works, follow her links.

Five Star review of Stories People Love
Review by John Hennessy:Five Stars
John Hennessy rated it : it was amazing
Shelves: 2016
'The Moral of this story is never give up on your dreams.' - author Brenda Mohammed.
With a title like Stories People Love,, this book already had a lot to live up to. As I read each of the four short stories in turn, the change from fiction to non-fiction made reading this collection all the more pleasurable.
As a bit of a travel fiend myself, the stand out story for me is Travel Dreams of Yesterday. The author writes this so well that you really feel you are journeying along with her.
Is it a spoiler to say each story is a heart warming one (a reference to one of the author's other works) ?
I don't think so. Each element of the collection's opener, A Headmaster's Daughter, twists and turns and demands that you keep reading.
The Dirtiest of All Evils is intriguing as a murder mystery and seems initially out of place. But reading the stories again, it feels a good fit.
This is a neat and extremely readable collection and shows an author who is able to write fiction and non-fiction elements seamlessly. It's not an easy combination and yet the author pulls it off admirably.

Retirement is Fun - A new Chapter [Autobiograpphy and A Sequel to My Life as a Banker ]
Excerpt from Book – Retirement is Fun [Sequel to My Life as a Banker – A Life Worth Living}
Posted on September 24, 2014 by brenchristo
To those of you who read “My Life as a Banker – A Life Worth Living,” and are wondering what happened to the author after her retirement from the bank, you will find it all in “Retirement is Fun – A New Chapter.”
Retirement is fun
Here is an excerpt from the book:
“We booked in at the Adam’s Mark Hotel where we had reservations. It was a fantastic hotel with four restaurants and a night-club. Some of our friends from Trinidad stayed in that same hotel. There were buffet lunches with a wide spread of dishes. The hotel was located on the 16th Street shopping mall with free mall rides every minute of the day and we took full advantage of that to do some more shopping. There was a cinema nearby and we attended a show on Sunday. When we returned to the hotel some of the agents from my agency who were staying at another hotel came to visit me at the Adam’s Mark Hotel.
On Sunday night the MDRT Welcome reception was held at the Stadium at the Invesco Field which is the football field of the Denver Broncos. The Adam’s Mark Hotel was one of the hotels reserved by MDRT to be a meeting place for members to be transported to that Stadium. Dozens of buses pulled up at the hotel to take us to our destination. When we arrived there, popular music bands entertained us. There were lots to eat and drink. It was remarkable to see agents from every part of the world having such a good time together. I met many of my other friends from other agencies and we enjoyed the night together.
At the Conference, on all three days, the speakers held our attention with their dynamic presentations. There was a young teacher who won the Teacher of the Year award in America. He said that he wrote a book and sent it to Oprah Winfrey. She invited him on her show, spoke about the book and held the book close to her heart. The next day his book was Number One in America. He used the royalties to open a chain of schools in America. I wondered if I could be so lucky if I submitted my book to her. Almost all of the speakers were afflicted with cancer and survived, or had a loved one who had it and died. Despite that they were all highly successful.
In our spare time we took bus tours of Denver City and the Rocky mountains. We visited Buffalo Bill’s grave and Red Rock Canyon. We met lots of friends from Trinidad and other parts of the world and had dinner with some of them. It was a remarkable and memorable trip. ”
The book is available on Amazon in Kindle, and Paperback and on Create Space.
Since the book was published in June 2014 it has obtained Five Star Reviews.
